This article covers how to configure the Technology Module: connecting your data sources, organizing Flexible Items into Groups, customizing columns, and managing your data over time. For how to use technology data in client meetings, see Understanding Technology Data in Strategy Overview.
How data gets in
Technology data flows into Strategy Overview from your integrations:
PSAs (ConnectWise, Autotask, Halo, Kaseya, Syncro, ServiceNow) sync Configurations: devices and assets they track
IT Glue syncs Configurations, Flexible Assets, Domains, and SSL Certificates
RMM tools don't connect directly. Sync your RMM data into your PSA first, then it flows through
Once synced, everything is called a Flexible Item regardless of source. Integration setup is covered in the Integrations collection.
Choosing your source of truth
If you have both a PSA and IT Glue, you'll have overlapping data for some asset types. Pick one source per type:
PSA is usually better for physical assets: workstations, servers, network devices. Better lifecycle data (purchase dates, warranty, model).
IT Glue is usually better for documentation assets: domains, SSL certificates, Flexible Assets.
Strategy Overview won't merge duplicates. Importing the same devices from both sources means you'll see them twice.
Configure what to import
Go to Settings > Integrations > [Your Integration] and select only the Configuration types you want to sync. Start with the essentials:
Workstations and laptops
Servers (physical and virtual)
Network devices (switches, routers, firewalls)
Add more types once you've run a few client meetings and know what you actually need. It's easy to add more data later. It's harder to clean up a mess from importing too much too early.
Creating and organizing Groups
Go to Settings > Flexible Items Settings > Groups to create Groups and assign Flexible Item types to them. A starting structure that works well for most MSPs:
User Technology: workstations, laptops, mobile devices
Infrastructure: servers, storage, ISP connections
Network: firewalls, switches, wireless access points
Software & Licenses: software, SaaS subscriptions, LOB apps
Security: SSL certificates, backup appliances, antivirus, EDR
Web: domain registrations, website hosting
Some items could fit more than one Group. Pick what makes sense for your team and stay consistent.
To remove a Group: click the trash icon next to it in the Edit Groups screen. This removes the Group, all its Items, and disconnects the sync in one step. You don't need to go back into your integration settings separately.
Color coding
Each Group can be assigned a color. Use distinct colors per Group so your team and clients can orient quickly at a glance during presentations and in the portal.
Customizing columns
Each Group has its own column configuration, set independently. Go to Settings > Flexible Items Settings > Columns, select a Group, then:
Check or uncheck columns to show only what's relevant for that Group
Reorder columns by dragging them into order
Rename column labels to make them clear to your team and clients
Set visibility per mode: Build, Display, or Presentation Mode
Column settings apply account-wide at the Group level, across all users, all companies, and all Reports. Configure it once and it's consistent for everyone.
Special column types
Use these instead of raw synced fields wherever available:
Age: calculates asset age from a mapped Purchase Date field. Real-time and sortable. Requires Purchase Date to be mapped in your integration's Configuration Field Settings. If the source field is blank for a device, Age will also be blank.
SmartMemory: normalizes RAM values into a clean, readable format regardless of how they're stored in your PSA
SmartOS: normalizes Operating System data into a consistent, client-friendly format
Relating Groups to Assessment Items
You can relate a Flexible Item Group to an Assessment Item so device data appears directly below the Assessment Item during grading. Open your template, find the Assessment Item, and select the Group to relate to it.
Each Assessment Item supports one related Group. If you want to see multiple device types together (like desktops and laptops), combine them into a single Group first.
Verifying data appears in your Reports
The standard Strategy Overview template includes a Technology Part by default. Once data is synced and Groups are set up, it appears automatically.
If you see an "Assets" Part instead of Technology, your template may be on an older configuration. Replace it under Settings > Templates > [Your Template] > Parts.
Removing data you don't need
To remove a single Group: go to Settings > Flexible Items Settings > Groups and click the trash icon. This removes the Group, all its Items, and disconnects the sync.
To clean up in bulk: go to Settings > Integrations > [Your Integration], deselect the Configuration types you no longer want, then go to Settings > Flexible Items Settings > Settings and click Delete all unmapped items.
Data quality
If data looks wrong (incorrect models, missing ages, blank fields), that's coming from your source system, not Strategy Overview. The platform displays exactly what's in your PSA or IT Glue. Fix it at the source and it updates on the next sync.
Most MSPs don't realize how widespread their data quality issues are until they see everything in one place. Strategy Overview makes those gaps visible so you can address them systematically rather than discovering problems mid-meeting.
Common questions
Imported data but expected columns aren't showing?
You need to enable them after importing. Go to Settings > Flexible Items Settings > Columns, select the Group, and check the boxes for the columns you want visible. If they're still missing, confirm they're selected to sync in your Integration settings.
Age column is blank for some items?
Check three things: the Purchase Date field is populated in your PSA, the field is mapped correctly in your integration's Configuration Field Settings, and the Age column's Source setting (under Edit Column) is pointing to the correct date field.
A note on Settings > Configurations
The Settings > Configurations section (including Configuration Classes) is currently deprecated and will be replaced in a future update. You can disregard this section for now.
