Technology data is the foundation of every TSM conversation. When you discuss aging hardware, lifecycle planning, or budget projections with a client, that conversation is powered by the data in the Technology Module. This article explains what the Technology Module is, where the data comes from, and how it connects to the rest of your TSM.
What the Technology Module does
The Technology Module is where all of your client's technology data lives in Strategy Overview. It collects devices, assets, licenses, and other technology information from your integrations and organizes them for use in Reports.
Here's what it gives you:
Automatic data analysis: Reports show real lifecycle data without manual prep work
Assessment context: relate technology data directly to Assessment items so you can see actual client data while grading
Arya AI assistance: give Arya real data to work with so it can generate better Assessment recommendations
Lifecycle planning: manage asset lifecycle budgeting based on real asset information like warranty dates, purchase dates, and age
Where the data comes from
Technology data flows into Strategy Overview from your connected integrations. Different source systems use different names for this data:
PSAs (ConnectWise, Autotask, Halo, Kaseya, Syncro, ServiceNow) call them Configurations: devices and assets they track
IT Glue uses Configurations, Domains, SSL Certificates, and Flexible Assets for custom asset types
Once any of this data syncs into Strategy Overview, it's all called Flexible Items, regardless of where it came from. This is the term you'll see throughout the platform.
How data flows: RMM to PSA to Strategy Overview
Strategy Overview doesn't integrate directly with RMM tools (ConnectWise Automate, Datto RMM, NinjaRMM, Kaseya VSA, etc.). Instead, the recommended data flow is:
RMM → PSA → Strategy Overview
Most RMMs can sync their discovered devices and monitoring data into your PSA as Configurations. Strategy Overview then pulls that data from your PSA. Check your RMM documentation for how to enable PSA sync if you haven't already.
Choosing your source of truth
If you have both a PSA and IT Glue, you'll likely have overlapping data. Workstation Configurations might appear in both systems. Strategy Overview doesn't automatically merge duplicates, so you need to pick one source of truth for each data type.
General recommendations:
PSA is usually best for physical assets: workstations, servers, network devices. PSAs typically have better lifecycle data like purchase dates, warranty expiration, and model information.
IT Glue is usually best for logical documentation: domains, SSL certificates, software licenses, flexible assets, and backup documentation.
These are guidelines, not rules. If your IT Glue Configurations are cleaner than your PSA data, use IT Glue. The goal is clean data, not a specific pattern.
The "less is more" approach
Many MSPs make the mistake of turning on every integration and importing every data type at once. That creates overwhelm and delays the value you get from the platform.
Start with the essentials:
Workstations and laptops
Servers (physical and virtual)
Network devices (switches, routers, firewalls, wireless access points)
These are the items that drive budget conversations and have the cleanest data in most MSPs. Run 2-3 TSMs with this core data, then expand based on what you actually need for client conversations.
Remember: It's always easy to add more data later. It's harder to clean up a mess from importing too much too early.
How technology data shows up in your TSM
Technology data appears in several places within a Strategy Overview Report:
Technology part: a dedicated tab showing your client's assets organized by group, with columns for age, warranty, operating system, and other relevant fields
Assessment items: when you relate Flexible Item groups to Assessment items, the actual technology data appears alongside each Assessment question, giving you real context for grading
Roadmap and Budget: Flexible Items with Budgets and timelines flow into your Roadmap and Budget views for lifecycle planning
Arya AI: when Flexible Items are related to Assessment items, Arya uses that data to generate more accurate and relevant recommendations
Flexible Item groups
Flexible Items are organized into groups: logical categories that structure how data appears in your Reports and how you work with it.
Recommended groups:
User Technology: workstations, laptops, mobile devices
Infrastructure: servers, storage systems, network devices, ISP
Network: firewalls, switches, wireless access points
Software and Licenses: software licenses, SaaS subscriptions, LOB applications
Security: SSL certificates, backup appliances, security software (antivirus, EDR)
Web: domain registrations, website hosting
Some items could fit multiple groups (is a firewall "Network" or "Security"?). Pick what makes sense for your team and be consistent. The goal is logical organization that helps your TSM conversations, not perfect categorization.
