Datto RMM Integration

How to create Datto RMM API credentials and connect it as a data integration to sync your devices.

Datto RMM is a data integration that syncs your sites and devices into Strategy Overview. Use it alongside a PSA integration or on its own as your source for technology data.

Datto RMM data flows into Strategy Overview's Technology Module as Flexible Items. Each device type becomes its own Flexible Item Group, the same place where PSA configurations land, so your team has one unified view of technology data.

Note: Datto RMM is the endpoint and monitoring platform. It is not the same as Datto Autotask, which is a PSA. If you want to connect Autotask instead, see Datto Autotask PSA Integration.

What Datto RMM syncs

Datto RMM brings in two things:

  • Companies: your Datto RMM companies (called sites in Datto RMM) map to companies that already exist in Strategy Overview. As a data integration, Datto RMM maps to your existing companies rather than creating new ones.

  • Devices: workstations, servers, and network devices, imported as Configurations. Each device type becomes a Flexible Item Group.

Note: As an RMM, Datto RMM focuses on device and endpoint data. It does not carry documentation records like Flexible Assets, domains, or SSL certificates (use IT Glue or Hudu for those), or the contact and ticket depth of a PSA. It is the right source for device inventory.

Choosing your source of truth

If you have both a PSA and Datto RMM connected, you may have overlapping data, like workstations appearing in both. Strategy Overview does not merge duplicates, so pick one source per data type and only import each type from one place.

Most MSPs bring physical assets (workstations, servers, network devices) from whichever system has the most complete and accurate data. If your Datto RMM inventory is better maintained than your PSA, use Datto RMM for those devices.

If you are only using Datto RMM (without a PSA), bring your devices in through Datto RMM.

Create API credentials in Datto RMM

API keys in Datto RMM are issued per user. First enable API access for the account, then generate a key pair on a specific user. You need the Administrator security level for both steps.

Note: A Datto RMM API key has full account access. When the API is called, the user's in-app security level is ignored, so every key grants the same account-wide access. Treat the API Secret Key like a password, and use a dedicated integration or service user where you can.

Step 1: Enable API access for the account

  1. In the left menu, open Setup > Global Settings.

  2. In the Access Control section, turn on Enable API Access.

  3. Click Save.

Step 2: Open the user that will own the keys

  1. Go to Setup > Users.

  2. Click the username that will own the API keys. Where possible, use a dedicated integration or service user.

Step 3: Generate the API keys

  1. On the user's page, scroll to the API section.

  2. Click Generate API Keys.

  3. Datto RMM displays three values:

    • API URL: the API endpoint for your platform.

    • API Key: the public key, used as the username when authenticating.

    • API Secret Key: the private key, used as the password. Shown only once.

  4. Click Copy all, store the values securely, then click Save user.

Important: Copy the API Secret Key immediately. Once you navigate away it is hidden permanently and cannot be retrieved. If it is lost, regenerate the keys, which invalidates the old pair and requires updating the integration.

If your Datto RMM environment requires IP whitelisting, add the Strategy Overview IPs before connecting. See the IP Allow List article.

Add the integration in Strategy Overview

The field names in Strategy Overview do not match Datto RMM's, so enter your three values like this:

  1. Go to Settings > Integrations > Add Integration and select Datto RMM.

  2. On the Connection tab, enter:

    • Server Domain Name: your Datto RMM API URL, including https:// (for example, https://vidal-api.centrastage.net).

    • Client ID: your Datto RMM API Key.

    • Client Secret: your Datto RMM API Secret Key.

  3. Save the connection.

Finding your API URL

Your API URL is the value you enter as the Server Domain Name. The simplest way to get it is to copy it from the user's page right after you generate the keys. If you need it ahead of time, your Datto RMM web address maps to an API URL: your web host (for example, vidal.rmm.datto.com) maps to the matching API host (vidal-api.centrastage.net).

Map companies

On the Companies tab, click Import Companies to load your Datto RMM companies, then map each one to the corresponding company in Strategy Overview. If a company already exists with the same name, it auto-maps. Map the rest manually, then click Save Mapping.

Import configurations

On the Configurations tab, check Enable sync Configurations with Datto RMM. You will see two sub-tabs:

  • Fields Selection: choose the device fields you want to download, then map your Datto RMM fields to Strategy Overview's special fields (Serial Number, OS Type, Name, Manufacturer, Purchase Date, Expiration Date, and RAM). Click Save Mapping.

  • Configurations Selection: filter the devices to import by company, type, and status, then import them.

Datto RMM devices flow into the Technology Module as Flexible Items, with each device type becoming its own Flexible Item Group.

Start simple. Bring in the device types that matter for your vCIO conversations first, typically workstations, servers, and network devices, and only the fields you need for strategic planning. You can add more later.

If you are also connected to a PSA, avoid importing the same type from both sources to prevent duplicates. Pick one source per data type.

Next steps after importing

Once your Datto RMM data is in Strategy Overview, set up a few things to get the most out of it:

  • Configure the Technology Module: review your Flexible Item Groups and set up columns, grades, and colors. See Configuring Your Technology Module.

  • Add technology data to your Reports: add a Flexible Items Part to your strategy template so Datto RMM data appears in your client Reports.

  • Relate Flexible Items to Assessment Items: linking a Flexible Item Group to an Assessment Item shows Datto RMM data alongside the assessment question, giving your vCIO real context for grading. See Customizing Your Assessment.

  • Enable warranty lookup: the Warranty Service can use the serial numbers from your Datto RMM devices to fill in warranty and purchase dates. See Warranty Service Integration.
